LOCATION AND EQUIPMENT

The points outlined in the Regional guidelines under the same heading, will apply. However, venue will normally be chosen by the National Committee,

There is a lot of equipment available at the Club Office and close liaison with them will be essential.

Trophies will have to be recalled before the event, the signature list from the previous year will be needed for this. On recall, all trophies should be returned to the office.

It has also proved to be a good idea for all entrants to have a commemorative plaque for the day. Those who are not successful that year will not go away empty handed.

The sale of Club regalia and an extensive raffle, has, in the past, proved popular and profitable for Club funds.

BMW dealer sponsorship and participation has, again, helped in the past to widen the appeal of the day.

ENTRY

The BMW Car Club Concours are open to all members and affiliated clubs. The organisers should give those participating entrants, on their arrival, a judging sheet, on which they should enter their details. Advise entrants where to park and the need for security, also the need for participants to be with their car when judged. Tell participants as to the times of judging, usually starting no later than 10.30 am. Likewise, advise as to the prize giving time, again, usually aimed at 3.30 pm, so that all members may attend the prize giving before setting off home.

CLASSES TO BE JUDGED

Elite Class: this will comprise all the overall winners from each region, from the current season. The winner will receive The President’s Cup awarded by John Safe. The runner-up will receive the Elite Cup.

Master Class: this will comprise all class winners from each region from the current season. The winner will receive the Master Class Trophy.

Open Class: this will comprise all other vehicles that have not won at any regional Concours from the current season.

Novice Class: this is open to members who have not entered their car in any Concours before, and will be judged using the same sheet as Open Class.

Modified Class: this should comprise any vehicle where a member chooses to enter due to non standard parts and non original paint colour.

Regional Trophy: the Regions will nominate two cars to represent them at the National Concours. The names of the nominees and registration numbers of their cars will be forwarded to Keith Waller and the Club Office before the National Concours.

The Regional Trophy will be awarded to the Region which has the highest marks for their nominated cars.

JUDGES – NATIONAL

The same judging criteria as in regional guidelines will be used but you will require a minimum of six judges, and it is essential to start by 10:30am as mentioned, especially if the turnout is good.

HELPERS – NATIONAL

You will need a number of persons to ensure correct parking and that members fill in their sheets and to help generally with any problems.

REGISTRATION

All entrants must produce their current membership card.

Failure to do so will exclude entrants from entering.

CO-ORDINATOR and ADJUDICATOR

A co-ordinator will be required to collect and collate the sheets when the judges have finished judging a car and add up the scores so that the results are known within the time scale. Collecting score sheets as they are completed has proved much easier than struggling to do them together near the end of the day.

The co-ordinator will check the scores are correctly added and ensure that everything is running to plan, sort out any problems that may arise during the Concours (i.e. judging scores).

The adjudicator’s decision will be final in any disputes about judging.

TIMETABLE

Concours should start at 10.30 am at the latest. Judging should be completed by 3.30pm – 4.00pm so that presentations can be completed by a reasonable time.

GUIDELINES FOR JUDGES - NATIONAL

The first objective of all judges is to set themselves a standard on at least one, if not two cars before starting to judge. You must keep to that standard throughout the length of the Concours. When judging a car, be very critical on any point you feel deserves to be marked down, likewise if you feel the car deserves praise - mark accordingly. You will find that the cars in the Elite and Master Classes are of a very high standard, so a small number of points will separate the cars. On each item you will see that there are 20 points to allocate - use them all if you have to but do not be afraid to mark down as many points as you wish.

BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR MARKS THROUGHOUT THE CONCOURS.

Before a car is considered to be ready for judging the interior / boot must be emptied, overmats I seat covers / etc must be removed by the entrant who must be present before judging starts, and have filled in personal details on the marking sheet. It is helpful for the entrant to place the sheet under the wiper, as this is a good indication to the judges that the entrant is ready to be judged.

There are very few cars in classes C and D and they are likely to be in a similar condition to each other so it would be easier to combine the two classes to form Class CD as in the regional classes.

GUIDELINES FOR JUDGES OF OPEN CLASS

The first objective of all the judges is to set themselves a standard on at least one car, if not two. They must keep to that standard throughout the length of the Concours. Before starting to judge, gather all the judges together and decide how to best utilise them e.g. splitting the sections of the judging sheet between pairs of judges. Look at the sections you are about to judge and establish a general standard and how many marks are to be deducted for faults.

ORIGINALITY

Check throughout this section as you mark each item for originality, Look for non-standard instruments, seats/carpets, tools etc. Deduct points for each non-standard item. Acceptable accessories are those available through authorised UK BMW dealers. Genuine Alpina and Schnitzer wheels etc. are considered acceptable and will not be penalised.

All other non BMW parts will be penalised by 2 points per item.

JUDGE'S DISCRETIONARY MARKS

These are to be used in the case of a tie or when two or three cars are very close in their scores. You may use a maximum of 10 (ten) points as you like to produce a winner. Consider the degree of restoration that the vehicle has received, also the presentation of the vehicle. Mileage may be taken into account only if the mileage can be verified by accurate documentation.

GUIDELINES FOR JUDGES OF ELITE CLASS

Cars in this class will be judged using a more detailed sheet based on the Master Class, so judges will be looking at the finer points of fit and finish in all sections.

Originality and cleanliness will also need to be of the highest standard.

GUIDELINES FOR JUDGES OF MODIFIED CLASS

Cars in this class will be judged mainly on cleanliness and the fit and finish of any accessory fitted.

Deduct marks, for example, where a spoiler doesn’t quite fit or the paintwork is of a poorer standard than you would expect to see on an original car.

RESULTS

Guidelines for this section are much the same as for the Regional except that the plaques and trophies will be dealt with by the National Committee.

Ask the Chairman of the National Committee or the sponsor to present the trophies to the winners.

The results should ideally be ready for announcement by 3:30 pm after the raffle.

Do not forget to take the name, address and telephone number of perpetual trophy winners so they can be contacted to return these in time for the next year’s Concours.
